New year???...

Reflecting on the past year…I have learned…that life is unpredictable. That love hurts, even when it comes in a tiny package. That broken hearts heal, but it takes time, more time than the mind can fathom. That pain draws people in and ignites curiosity. That personal, doesn’t really mean private to everyone. That as invasive as this may feel…these encounters also force you to work through the thoughts and the numbness in your head. That we fall down, and we get up, and we fall down, and we get up again…even when we don’t feel like we can. That tragedy can absolutely tear you apart, or strengthen your bond to the ones you love, AND you have to decide which way you will let it take you. That strength is not something that comes easily, that growing stronger through the pains of life is heart breaking and devastating, but necessary and enlightening. That in the end, you pick up the pieces, broken as they may be, and you carry on…because that is life. We all have pain, hidden or obvious. We all have holes in our hearts, pieces missing from our stories, and miles to go on our journeys. With deep breathes we can accept the loss, heal the pain, and understand the why. With a timid heart we can return to the story we have been creating, treasure the chapter we briefly relished, and live our lives. I have learned that I am strong, far stronger than I ever hoped to be. I have learned that I am compassionate and forgiving. I have learned that I can let go of dreams and desires…so that they can find their own stories. I have learned that loss can actually be rewarding. I have learned…

32 Random Acts of Sarah...

Yesterday was a wonderful day! A very busy day, filled with smiles, excitement, sweetness, and surprise. At the end of the day…I was completely exhausted…but SO happy! Trying to recognize and record my random acts was a challenge and I found that I made most of the acts quite obvious. Simple things like smiling at strangers, letting people merge in traffic, taking my cart back to the store….didn’t make my list this year. Not that they aren’t wonderful acts of kindness, but they are a part of my every day. In celebration of ME, I wanted to treat people, to make them smile, and to see how easy it is to make a simple difference in someone’s day.

Here is my list:

1. I started off by listing one shirt on The Smiling Heart for FREE. I gave the recipient the choice of size and color. I posted the listing right after midnight and was surprised that it was not found until after 6:30am. I will be making a blue Africa Love shirt for a wonderful little boy!

2. I sent one of those huge containers of Red Vines (my favorite as a kid) to school with Nathan so he could give them to all of his students.

3. I sent fresh baked cookies to school with Nathan to hand out to the coaches and security guards.

4. I left a ‘thank you’ and a treat for the mail carrier.

5. Tae and I went to Dutch Bro’s (so yummy) and I bought coffee for the person behind me at the drive thru.

6. I brought my sister one of those yummy Dutch Bro coffees.

7. I chaperoned Taegan’s field trip to the children’s theater.

8. I brought fresh baked cookies (50 cookies) for Taegan's entire class to enjoy after our picnic lunch.

9. I hand wrote cards to a few special people.

10. After school, Taegan and I left bubbles at the park for kids to find and play with.

11. Tae and I went to the Children’s Hospital and donated coloring books, crayons, drawing pads, markers, and playing cards.

12. At the hospital we walked over to the oncology waiting room and taped quarters to the snack machine.

13. We stopped at our favorite donut shop (much better than DD) and bought a dozen. Then we headed to our neighborhood Fire Department to drop them off. Much to our surprise we ended up with a tour of the fire house, the trucks, a little Q & A for Miss T, and wonderful conversation. This was Tae’s favorite stop!

14. We went to the library and hid a dollar in a Little House on The Prairie book.

15. We hid another dollar in a Magic Tree House book.

16. We went to the dollar store and bought smiley face balloons. We then walked over to Wal-M@rt and handed them out to random children.

19. I bought a gift card and had the cashier use it on the next person in line.

20. We went to the post office and left stamps for anyone who might need them.

21. We left quarters on a soda machine.

22. I made a keepsake for a new grandma, wrote a card, and mailed it off.

23. I made a small package for a special little girl for no reason except that I think she is lovely.

24. After dinner I wrote this sign and taped it to the mirror in the bathroom. I hope it made someone smile. Thanks for the perfect words sister!

25. I bought a dessert (giant salted chocolate chip cookie) and had the waitress give it to a random table.

26. I left quarters at a water refill station.

27. I left money for a free scoop of ice cream at B.R.

28. Tae and I left quarters for a load of laundry at the laundry mat.

29. We left bus fare at the bus stop by our house.

30. We went to a grocery store and filled all the toy machines with quarters for random kids to find.

31. I left a note on a random car hoping they had a wonderful day.

32. We left bubbles on the neighbors door step for their kids to find in the morning.

Many of our acts were left for people to find later, but just the thought of their surprise made me smile. There were so many highlights to my day. Listening to Taegan tell me the acts of kindness she would like to do on her birthday was enough to melt my heart. Her idea to collect stuffed animals and mail them to orphanages, so when children were feeling sad or lonely they would have someone to snuggle, made me proud and teary. I will have to figure out how to make that happen. Nathan sent me a video of one of his students singing me happy birthday, absolutely amazing! Tears again! The ‘Happy Birthdays’ from all corners of my life made me feel loved ALL day. Yet, thinking of ways to add a little happiness to someone else’s day really made my birthday special. Running around like a mad woman trying to complete 32 acts in less than 12 hours was a new level of crazy for me, but it opened my eyes to the simple things I can add to our everyday routine to bring a little cheer to others.

I highly recommend Random Acts of You on your next birthday. You probably noticed that several of our acts involved money, yet I didn’t really spend much out of my pocket. I started by raiding the change jar for quarters (because they just sit there) and found that there was more than enough for our acts. While I completely believe that the greatest gift you can give someone is your time, there is only so much time in one day. So, the practicality of completing 32 time giving acts was just not possible. Our acts were small, but heartfelt and while we came across many people who just didn’t understand, the people who did were enough to make me want to do it again!

Tomorrow is my birthday…and this is what I have planned…32 for 32.
I am one that often dodges the question…what would you like for your birthday. Hmmm…Nothing. I am not fancy. I don’t really splurge. I often have grand ideas and happily trade them for practical alternatives…they just feel better. I found this post on pintrest (which is amazing btw). It called to me. I thought it was a fantastic idea and decided on a whim to try and do the same…32 Random Acts of Sarah for my 32nd birthday. 32 ways to say thank you for 32 wonderful years…this is a gift I am excited about…the gift of giving. Tae and I have been preparing all afternoon…cookies baking as I type :)

Today was ‘Open House’ at Tae’s school. I love looking at all the projects they have been working on. This is a mobile that she made. On one side of the card she wrote the things she liked or was afraid of when she was a baby, on the other side she wrote how she feels about those same things now. The purpose was to show the kids how people grow and change.

This is my windshield after something was either kicked up by or flew out of a pickup truck. I won’t tell the whole story…but, it involved the freeway, the rain, and me frantically trying to get two elderly men to pullover…and them ignoring me. My baby has been sick…third day home with Mama, eighth day of school she has missed in a month :(

Tonight I tucked her in bed and then decided to join her for some snuggles. She nestled into me, wrapped my arm around her, and laced her tiny fingers through mine. I smiled at how small her fingers still feel. She was asleep in moments, her gentle breath tickling our hands. She is soft, she is sweet, she is kind, she is LOVE.

I’ve noticed a little silliness in Tae during gymnastics. The silliness typically emerges when she has to work on something she hasn’t mastered…she gets discouraged and acts like a complete goof. There is a fine line between having fun in a class and being disrespectful of your coach. I want her to have fun, but I don’t want her to be one of those kids. I told her last week that if she can master her pullover, I will buy her a new leotard…aka a gymnastics treasure.

Her response in a whinny, annoyed voice … Ma-OM!?!?! (insert limb flailing) Now I really have to try!!!

She did a perfect pull over each time…nothing wrong with a little ~~bribery~~ motivation!

Bunny, Tae and I joined some friends for roller skating tonight. Oh, the anticipation for this activity! I was so excited…roller skating flashbacks were bouncing around in my head. I had this fantasy of Tae, Bunny, and I holding hands, the wind blowing through our hair, skating around the rink laughing and bobbing to the music…with ease. Such a joyful picture….in my mind.

Tae hated it…in fact “hated” is an understatement. She told me roller skating was her NIGHTMARE.

Bunny and I tried everything to help her. I rented a walker for her. I tried holding her up under her arms and skating with her. I tried letting her pull herself along the wall. Each time she fell her disdain for skating grew stronger. I felt awful for her. I think she only made it around the rink twice, called it a night, and demanded her flip flops back.

Yet, it still was a great night. Bunny was cracking me up with her fear of running over one of the hundreds of small children skating, flailing her arms each time one crossed her path. Tae was laughing at herself and how horrible she thought roller skating was. I was in heaven skating with thoughts of future date nights* to the roller rink…hmm, to be a kid again…

*N was home sick in bed :(

This family LOVES a tasty cup of tea! So much so that we have an entire basket full of tea varieties… we all have our favorites and then there are the ones that help with colds and sore throats. The tea craze dies down a little when the weather heats up, but right now the kettle and these boxes are being used daily.

Tea or coffee??? I say both, how about you?

We are having family movie night tonight. N is feeling a little under the weather, Tae is still having some issues and I think we all just need a relaxing night.

…Fifty…Tae’s class had an Expo on the fifty states, her project was on Tennessee. She was so excited about gathering her facts and creating her board. The kids have been working on this assignment all month. She was a rock star reading her note cards, over and over and over again…Proud Mama over here! She definitely wasn’t feeling 100% but still did a really great job.

I have always wondered how I would handle having a tire blow out on the freeway…and now I know. It was manageable, yet very frightening for Miss Tae. I wish I had been able to get further away from the rushing morning traffic, but it wasn’t possible. Nathan came and grabbed Tae so she could get to school and then he came back to wait with me. We waited for the tow truck by sitting on the freeway wall. It was amazing that we sat there for over 45 minutes and nobody, I mean nobody, stopped to see if we needed help. I found this odd, especially since most of that time I was sitting by myself. Eventually a police highway truck stopped to ask what we were doing (???) and then grumpily left us to fend for ourselves. Odd. Well, 3 tires later we are good as new, have a new spare, and are safe for travel.

Starting to wonder if we should have cars at all???

Tae hasn’t been able to kick the last bits of her congestions from the virus she had a few weeks back so naturally she has a little infection going on in her sinuses. She has been doing really well and we haven’t had to take her hardly at all. I just know when ‘the cough’ settles in for a few nights that there is more than a cold going on…so after school we headed in. She wasn’t upset at all…sadly she feels quite comfortable in a doctor’s office, she knows this drill!

My girl is just looking so mature and grown up these days (even with chocolate on her face). That missing tooth has bumped her right up to “almost” seven year old status…bitter sweet!

I have the stomach flu AGAIN and was miserable last night, sleeping on the bathroom floor or in the shower. I am feeling half alive today, an improvement.

One more of my Little Mama because she is so exquisite! Love her!

Today we managed to hang a wall shelf in our kitchen that has been sitting on the counter since xmas break. We are feeling very proud of ourselves. These are my blue mugs hanging from the cute little hooks on the shelf.

Does your child find great humor in dressing you up as you try to work on the computer? She told me I was ready to go to the rodeo…hmm??? Looks more like rob a bank…or survive a dust storm.

Tooth update:
Being the strong minded girl that she is, she didn’t even check under her pillow this morning! She had decided it was a lost cause. But fairies don’t want little girls to cry, right? So the magic was kept alive, tooth #3 earned her $3 and she smiled a happy toothless grin.

Tae has been on a mission to lose a tooth at school. She worked on this tooth all week, practically desperate to have the honor of a tooth falling out at school and receive the coveted “tooth necklace” that would be hers if she could pull it off…or out.

Well, she did it. She lost the tooth, by happily pulling it out. It is Friday, she was running out of time and the tooth was just dangling. She gleefully displayed the necklace she had so desired. She was smiles and sunshine and oh so very proud of herself…

And then, she lost the tooth…she lost the lost tooth…I think she was more upset about the idea of the fairy not coming anymore than she was about the actual tooth being gone. Parting with the tooth was an unavoidable event, having the tooth fairy come in the night is a treasured moment…I would be sad too. I am sure it will all work out just fine...

I have been proud of the ME that has become a part of my life again. I have been realizing the pain that took over my life for so long, the emptiness that seemed insurmountable. I have reclaimed my life, I am me again and it feels amazing!

Yet, I think there are parts of my heart that will always feel a little hollow, and I understand. I am ok with the reminders. Today I felt it. Like an internal scar that reminds you of a painful time in your life…Like a timer in my heart that pinches and aches ever so slightly because of the turmoil that was caused on this day. Like a cloud, the little glimpses of the past sadness crept in my chest and froze me. Today, those hollow spots ached and I recognized them, and I cried, a lot. And then, I felt better...

I felt like me once again.

3 years is ago, on this day, I felt like my world was ending…today, I feel like it is just beginning….

This morning, sickly Mama and sickly Tae set off to do a quick paper chase to the doctor’s office.

Tae’s sickliness reaches a whole new level while Mama is driving on the FREEWAY. Mama has nothing to offer the poor girl except an empty water bottle… as in spring water, disposable bottle…

This picture is Tae teaching her dolls to do the airplane (water safety) in the bathtub…for about an hour today…. while I cleaned up the mess you were imagining above….in my car.

Have a good laugh…Tae is fine now…car is clean….we’ll be staying home tomorrow…again.

My plus one is usually at school when I have the littles…but was home sick today…and yesterday…and probably tomorrow too….I am sure D and H aren’t far behind us :( It's just been one of those holiday seasons.

Our multi pack of tissue boxes is gone and I had to restock today…insane amount of tissue use going on over here…not normal.

I got our home study renewal notarized this afternoon…truckin’ along over here! Pretty proud to have the paperwork turned around in less than a week…especially with this tissue problem we are having!

Tae was lying on the floor in her typical “I don’t feel well” fashion and D & H joined her…not a lot of camera cooperation, but cute just the same!
